We could not believe what we saw and felt ten years
ago when suri-fleeced llamas caught our attention. We
were so impressed; we then embarked on a journey to
diversify our farm’s “produce” by adding suri llamas.
As the herd grew and we got our hands on more suri
and suri-type fleeces, we realized what a truly unique
opportunity these magnificent animals presented. We
began compiling data about fleeces and bloodlines, and
then proceeded to assemble one of the largest suri llama
herds in the world. We amassed production data about
the fleeces we were raising and did processing test
runs. Our backgrounds in both textiles and livestock
breeding helped us progress quickly. With this information,
we directed our breeding program into major color categories
with stated goals of consistency in color, fiber uniformity,
elite fineness and luster.
We soon realized how much other breeders craved information
on suri fleece. To share the knowledge we had gained,
we held the first Suri Symposium at WoodsEdge in 2003
with breeders from all over North America in attendance.
It was clear that suri llamas could become a viable
industry. With other suri llama breeders, I helped form
the Suri Llama Association. As demand grew, we hosted
the first Suri Llama Sale at WoodsEdge. Popular features
of the sale were the full reproductive guarantees, breeder
education, and our pledge of ongoing support with WoodsEdge
hallmark services that our suri llama buyers still receive
today.
The choice to diversify our farm’s production with
suri llamas has been a good one, with a return on investment
both financially and in enjoyment.
